When is the best time to hike in Spain?

Updated October 30, 2026

Spain is large and varied, so the best month depends on where you walk. As a rule, spring and autumn suit most places, summer suits high mountains, and winter suits the south and the coast.

These are rules of thumb, not forecasts. Always check the official weather and avalanche bulletins before you go.

Month by month

  • January and February: snow on the high ground in the north and the Sierra Nevada. The south and the coast are mild.
  • March to May: spring is the best season for most areas. Rivers can run high after the snow melts.
  • June: heat builds in the south and on the plains. The high mountains start to open.
  • July and August: very hot at low altitude. Walk early, or go high. Afternoon storms are common in the mountains.
  • September: still warm, with fewer people. A good month for most areas.
  • October and November: autumn colour and cooler days. Rain is more likely, and the first snow falls high up.
  • December: cold and short days. Check daylight and plan to finish early.
